Percussion WorkShop

Today, Tuesday 6th March  my class Fódla had the percussion workshop held in the library. It was all based around African Drumming. Dave was the mans name who was teaching us. He was really nice and taught us three songs. We all sat around in a circle and Dave showed us how to hold the drums properly. Here are some popular drums and some information about them.
  1. Djembe - Goblet shaped hand drum with goat skin (Sometimes cow or antelope) Good bass, sharp slaps.
  2. Dunun - Barrel shaped with cow skin each end. Played with a stick to give deep bass.
  3. Bougarabou - Similar to djembe but taller and with cow or antelope skin. Good bass, rich tone.
  4. Goumbe - Similar to a conga, distended barrel shape with cow or antelope skin. Good bass, mellow tone.
  5. Kpanlogo - Distended barrel shape with antelope skin held by pegs. Rich but soft tone.
  6. Ewe drums - Similar to kpanlogo but come in a range of sizes and played with sticks or stick and hand.

We learned how to make the different sounds using our hands on the drum. song people used the Dunun which is a bigger drum and makes a deepier sound plus you have to use a stick to make the proper sound.
